Permeate Carrier Length Calculator
This permeate carrier length calculator estimates how much permeate carrier (tricot) each RO membrane element needs — by size, with scrap allowance built in.

Estimate Your Permeate Carrier Requirement
Pick an element size (or enter a custom active area). The result updates instantly — all allowances are editable.
One permeate carrier per leaf vs two membrane faces, so carrier material is about half the membrane sheet area. Utilization 88%, scrap 5% — editable.

The Formula Behind the Calculator
An element has one permeate carrier per leaf, sealed inside the membrane envelope, while the membrane forms two faces per leaf — so carrier material is about half the membrane sheet area:
Plan Both Flow Layers Together
The permeate carrier works alongside the feed spacer. Size the other layer with the feed spacer length calculator, and if you are unsure which is which, read what a permeate carrier is and feed spacer vs permeate carrier.
Check the carrier specification against the permeate carrier data sheet, and estimate membrane with the sheet usage calculator.
Carrier essentials
- Low resistance for permeate flow
- Enough stiffness to support membrane
- Grooves run toward the central tube
- Consistent thickness for clean rolling
Carrier Planning Protects Flow and Schedule
The permeate carrier is hidden inside the element, but a shortfall or wrong grade is felt in both output and production flow.
Running Short
Too little carrier mid-batch stops the line until more is cut or delivered.
Wrong Grade
A carrier that is too soft or too thick changes permeate flow and rolling.
Excess Waste
Cutting without a real scrap figure quietly raises material cost.

Permeate Carrier Calculator FAQ
How much permeate carrier does one RO element need?
As a rough guide, a 4040 element needs around 4.7 m² of permeate carrier and an 8040 around 22 m², after allowances. Use the calculator above with your exact active area and roll width for a closer figure.
How is permeate carrier length calculated?
This calculator takes the element’s active membrane area, divides by a utilization factor, multiplies by 0.5 (one carrier per leaf versus two membrane faces) and adds a scrap allowance. Length is the resulting area divided by your roll width.
Why is permeate carrier about half the membrane sheet area?
The permeate carrier sits inside each folded membrane envelope — one carrier serves the two membrane faces of a leaf. So the carrier footprint is roughly half of the membrane sheet used for the same element.
Is permeate carrier the same as the feed spacer?
No. The permeate carrier carries product water inside the envelope, while the feed spacer carries feed water in the channel between leaves. They are different materials and quantities — size each one separately.
