A permeate carrier is a grooved tricot fabric sealed inside the membrane envelope of a spiral-wound RO element. After water passes through the membrane, the carrier gives it a low-resistance path to spiral inward to the central tube, while supporting the membrane against collapse under pressure. It carries product water — not feed water — and is also called a permeate spacer or tricot.
A Grooved Fabric Inside the Membrane Envelope
In a spiral-wound element, the membrane is folded into envelopes. The permeate carrier sits inside each envelope, sealed on three edges with the membrane and open to the central tube. Its grooves give permeate a clear channel to spiral inward, even when the whole stack is squeezed under operating pressure.

Two Jobs at Once
The permeate carrier does two things together: it keeps a low-resistance path so product water reaches the central tube without choking, and it physically supports the membrane so it does not press into the channel and block flow. Balancing those two — flow versus support — is what carrier design is about.
