Why Do RO Membrane Elements Need a Brine Seal?

It is a small rubber seal, but without it an industrial RO element simply will not perform. Here is what the brine seal does and why it matters.

RO membrane elements need a brine seal to force all the feed water through the element instead of letting it slip around the outside. The seal sits around the element near the feed end; under pressure its lip presses against the pressure-vessel wall and blocks the bypass gap. Without it, feed water takes the easy path around the element, the membrane sees less flow, and salt rejection and recovery drop.

How It Works

It Closes the Bypass Gap

Inside a pressure vessel there is always a small clearance between the element and the vessel wall. The brine seal is a flexible lip seal that rides in that gap. When the system pressurises, feed pressure gets behind the lip and pushes it firmly against the wall — closing the gap so feed water has nowhere to go but through the element.

The lip has to face the feed inlet to inflate correctly. Fitted backwards, it stays collapsed and barely seals. For dimensions and fitting, see the brine seal data sheet.
