Under pressure, feed flow tries to push the wound layers forward; the ATD cap braces them so the element cannot “telescope” — slip forward into a cone shape — and tear. What It Is

The Cap That Holds the Element Together

The ATD cap is a rigid plastic ring — usually ABS or Noryl — fitted over each end of the element. It spans the wound layers and braces them against the central tube, so when feed pressure pushes forward, the layers cannot creep out of the end. On many designs the cap also carries the seal interface to the interconnector.

What It Prevents

Telescoping: The Failure It Stops

Telescoping is when the wound layers slide forward under pressure and the element ends up shaped like a collapsed telescope or cone. It stretches and tears the membrane and glue lines, and the element fails. It is one of the most damaging — and most common — rolling-related failures, which is exactly what the ATD cap exists to prevent.
