What Is a Permeate Carrier in an RO Membrane Element?

If you are new to spiral-wound element production, the permeate carrier is one of two flow layers inside the element — and the one that carries your product water. Here is what it is and what it does.

Quick Answer

A permeate carrier is a grooved tricot fabric sealed inside the membrane envelope of a spiral-wound RO element. After water passes through the membrane, the carrier gives it a low-resistance path to spiral inward to the central tube, while supporting the membrane against collapse under pressure. It carries product water — not feed water — and is also called a permeate spacer or tricot.

What It Is

A Grooved Fabric Inside the Membrane Envelope

In a spiral-wound element, the membrane is folded into envelopes. The permeate carrier sits inside each envelope, sealed on three edges with the membrane and open to the central tube. Its grooves give permeate a clear channel to spiral inward, even when the whole stack is squeezed under operating pressure.

It is a warp-knit polyester tricot, often resin-treated for stiffness. For full specifications see the permeate carrier data sheet.

What It Does

Two Jobs at Once

The permeate carrier does two things together: it keeps a low-resistance path so product water reaches the central tube without choking, and it physically supports the membrane so it does not press into the channel and block flow. Balancing those two — flow versus support — is what carrier design is about.

It is easy to confuse with the feed spacer, which sits in the feed channel and carries feed water. They are different materials in different places — see feed spacer vs permeate carrier, and size it with the permeate carrier length calculator.

Easy way to remember

  • Permeate carrier = Product water
  • Inside the membrane envelope
  • Grooves point to the central tube
  • Dense tricot, not open mesh
  • One per leaf — never swapped with the spacer

Why It Matters

The Carrier Quietly Sets Your Product Flow

It is hidden inside the element, but the permeate carrier decides how freely product water leaves the membrane.

Point 01

Low Resistance

Good grooves let permeate flow freely; a choked carrier caps your output.

Point 02

Membrane Support

It stops the membrane intruding into the channel under pressure.

Point 03

Clean Rolling

Consistent thickness keeps winding tension and finished diameter on target.

People Also Ask

What is a permeate carrier made of?

It is a warp-knit polyester (PET) tricot fabric, often resin or epoxy treated for stiffness. The grooved structure carries permeate to the central tube and supports the membrane.

Is a permeate carrier the same as tricot or a permeate spacer?

Yes. Permeate carrier, permeate spacer and tricot all describe the same component — the fabric inside the membrane envelope that channels product water to the central tube.

How is the permeate carrier different from the feed spacer?

The permeate carrier sits inside the envelope and carries product water, while the feed spacer sits in the feed channel between leaves and carries feed water. They are different materials and are not interchangeable.

How much permeate carrier does an element need?

There is one carrier per leaf, so the amount scales with the number of leaves and element size. Use the permeate carrier length calculator to estimate it per element and per batch.
