What the Tapes Do

Two tapes appear in element production. The outer-wrap (bonding) tape wraps the finished roll to hold its shape and protect it — on household elements this is the outer layer in place of a fibreglass shell. Central-tube tape secures the membrane and carrier at the core during winding. Both must apply with even tension for a clean, consistent finished diameter.

Selection

Choosing the Right Tape

The tape has to hold the wrap without lifting, stretch evenly for a smooth finish, and suit your tape-winding machine. Width and adhesion matter most: too narrow and the wrap takes too many passes; too little adhesion and the end lifts in storage or handling.

Wrap quality shows up in the finished diameter and in visual inspection, so match the tape to your process and keep it consistent.

What tape is used to wrap RO membrane elements?

Do household and industrial elements use tape differently?

Household elements use outer-wrap tape as the outer layer, in place of a fibreglass-and-epoxy shell. Industrial elements use tape during the build and a fibreglass overwrap on the outside.

What tape width should I use?

Width depends on the element size and your tape-winding machine. A wider tape covers in fewer passes but must still wrap smoothly. Confirm the width against your equipment and element sizes.

How much tape does an element need?

Outer-wrap tape follows the element circumference for the number of wraps, plus any central-tube tape. Use the tape length calculator to estimate it per element and per batch.
